Therapist Training

The Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders offers a two-year Therapist Training program for certified Texas public school teachers. This comprehensive training is designed for teachers of students with dyslexia using proven intervention techniques and is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council.   Candidates for the training must be employed by a Texas public school, hold a valid Texas teaching certificate and have written support from their school district.

Graduates of the Therapist Training program are eligible to sit for The Alliance for Accreditation and Certification of Structured Language Education, Inc. certification exam at the therapy level. Twelve hours of graduate-level credit are offered through Midwestern State University. 

General Program Information

The course offers training in:

  • Educational identification of dyslexia 
  • Characteristics of dyslexia 
  • Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia, a multisensory, structured approach to teaching:
  • Phonemic awareness 
  • Phonic skills 
  • Vocabulary 
  • Fluency 
  • Comprehension skills 
  • Spelling 
  • Handwriting
  • Classroom strategies and techniques used for students with dyslexia 
  • Conducting parent and teacher information seminars 

Candidates for the training must:

  • Be employed by a Texas public school
  • Hold a teaching certificate
  • Have administrative support

Length of the Program

  • Two years 

Brief description of the two years:

Year one

  • Identification and Placement Seminar
  • Introductory Course includes
  • Sixteen(16) week days in the summer 
  • Monday-Thursday 
  • 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Five (5) Introductory Seminars during the school day 
  • Five (5) video demonstration lessons 
  • One (1) approved professional conference

Year Two

  • Five (5) days in the summer
  • Advanced Course includes
  • Monday – Friday 
  • 8:00 am – 4:00 pm 
  • Five (5) advanced seminars during the school day 
  • Five (5) video demonstration lessons 
  • One (1) approved professional conference
